Current school staff at Corry, and some former staff of what was once the Conelway school, show pieces of stained glass recovered from the former school building and restored for display at Corry Area Intermediate School.
At Monday night's monthly school board meeting, Corry Area Intermediate School Principal Melissa Nufher shared a public comment on stained glass frames that came from the former Conelway school out by Route 6, in Elgin. In attendance at the meeting were some of the former Conelway staff. The glass was discovered by Dan Moore, who is the owner of the building, now being run as a wedding and banquet venue called Enchanted Beginnings.
While renovating, Moore noticed the pieces of artwork and felt the glass was a piece of history that needed to be preserved. The glass was recovered from the building, fixed up and put into frames to be displayed and remembered. The glass was fixed by Connie Balek, who works with a lot of stained glass projects, and her brother. These frames will be hung in the lobby area of Corry Area Intermediate School (CAIS).
“The projects that beautifully combine a piece of our school community’s history, along with the dedication of Dan Moore and a former retiree, Connie Balek,” Nuhfer commented.
Also during the meeting, Steve Falk from Felix & Gloekler gave a presentation detailing a draft audit for the 2023-24 school year. Falk came in and explained the findings so far as the company continues its review of the school district’s financials.
“I did want to thank Brenda [Clabbatz, business manager], Julie [Krone, assistant business manager] and the rest of the administration staff for their help during the audit,” he said. “They’re usually very prepared when we come out.”
They also gave a shout out to Corry’s business manager Brenda Clabbatz, as she will be heading into retirement.
“I definitely appreciate all the time together, and good luck in the future,” Falk said.
